broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> good morning everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm caroline tyler. let's start things out with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn, good morning, everyone. from the golden gate bridge usually it's just here we are used to the low clouds and fog but it is widespread. we are planning on it to evaporate and look for the mist and drizzle to give way to sunny conditions. numbers are pretty mild, in the 50s and 60s, and by the afternoon you will notice the warmth headed away from our coast. low 80s. we will keep it a little bit gray at the shoreline. and partial clearing there.

mild though, and by the evening hours temperatures are still in the 60s and we are on our way to a big change in the forecast for the entire week ahead. i'll have it for you coming up. carolyn. >> thanks, lisa. in your giants colors, the giants are just hours away from meeting the st. louis cardinals in game one were the national league championship series at&t park. fans all over the bay area are quite excited. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live at the ballpark. i know it's early, but do you see any activity around there? >> just a little bit of activity. good morning, carolyn, we actually live in front of the java house on the embarcadero. this is one of the oldest restaurants around here, 100 years old, in fact. they are getting into the spirit with the chalkboard saying "giants." but the real center is right behind me, a park. this is where it will be all about the giants. the team is back in town. you can already feel the spirit spreading across the area.

local businesses getting ready for fans and all the profits that they will likely bring. now the giants have been warming up for today's game against st. louis. team members say they feel good. they are happy for the home field advantage and they are counting on a boost from cheering fans. local bars and restaurants like the polo grounds are gearing up for hungry, thirsty customers. they say they need the business to survive flynn this time of year. don't forget about all that gear, giants merchandise, hat, t-shirts, all hot sellers. some team members say it's all about believing in yourself. and the fans say they believe in the giants. >> i'm here from north carolina. we spend money to come see these guys when they come to win. >> it's one of those things we knew we believe in ourselves and we knew we could do it. we had to take it as the cliche goes, one game at a time. we really did. >> the difference will be who can play together, who can stick the closest and who is the better team, not just on the

played in san francisco, if necessary. >> developing news, the space shuttle endeavour is still inching his way to its new home in los angeles at the california science center. this is a live look. you know the shuttle was supposed to arrive last night by 9:00, but it had to take a break. it started rolling again around 1:30 this morning and has since traveled another 8 blocks with roughly a mile and a half to go. now there's no single reason for this delay. it's the accumulation of a lot of small problems along the way. in one case a tree that planners thought would not be in the way had to be cut down. it has to be very carefully maneuvering around light poles as well. what you are looking at now is how endeavor made a much quicker pass through the bay area on september 21st when it flew over on the back of a specially-equipped boeing 747 on

its way to l.a. we have more developing news for you now. extreme athlete feel felix bumgarner is on his way to mike a skydive from 23 miles above the earth. and this was the scene as he launched from rosswell, new mexico around 8:30 this morning. he's inside a capsule being lifted by a 30 million tube pick foot helium balloon. the jump was postponed twice last week by high winds. this is a live picture you are seeing here. it will take several hours for him to reach the edge of space to make the jump. if he touches the capsule on his way out it could tear his protective suit and that could be deadly. n.a.s.a. is testing the suit by possible use by astronauts in making emergency escapes. now during his free fall bumgarner hopes to become the

first skydiver to break the sound barrier, which means he would become the first supersonic skydiver. in other news this morning an east bay community on alert this weekend after a series of mail thefts. but neighbors do have one advantage, surveillance video. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the details. >> here he's on the property running up past the car. he has a cigarette in his hand. >> what you are listening to is one of the victims in a series of thefts in this neighborhood. he agreed not to use the victim's name but he agreed to walk us step by step through images about of the thief caught on his surveillance system. >> looking for witnesses quickly grabs the mail, turns around. looks down the hill. he obviously has the mail in his possession. >> police say this suspect may be responsible for several

thefts in the neighborhood. >> over the course of about the past week we've had approximately four incidents of mail theft in el~cerrito. it occurred in the area of arlington boulevard and cutting boulevard. >> the resident who got this surveillance video said this thief made off with a cashier's check from his mailbox. another one said someone stole a package right off her front steps. this is a neighborhood neighbors tell us has been safe and they try to keep an eye on each other's property. >> we find out more about it now since we have a neighborhood watch where e-mails are exchanged between neighbors >> one of the biggest concerns by investigators when someone rifles through someone else's mailbox is identity theft. >> there may be account information in there, depending on bank statements. >> thanks to this surveillance video, police have excellent images of they're suspect and the vehicle he drove off in. they believe it's a silver or white cobalt. >> there's four separate cases of mail theft in this

neighborhood in the last week but police say there may be other victims. they are hoping residents will monitor their accounts and if for some reason they believe they are an additional victim, they should contact police. abc7 news. in hayward a 66-year- old pedestrian has died after being hit by a motorist on jackson street last night. police say it happened just before nine. the 26-year-old motorcyclist was also injured but his injuries are not life-threatening, both men of hayward residents. jackson street was shut down for about an hour and a half in both directions. >> a man who helped search for a missing hollister woman is now accused of killing her. david kept police at hollister in bay as they went to talk to him friday night about the missing mother. he surrendered about 3:00 yesterday morning and police found a woman's body inside his

home. investigators believe it's 25-year-old heather carroll, who disappeared last wednesday. police say the man told investigators the woman died after the two got into an argument. he took part in one of the many community searches for carroll. >> straight ahead, san francisco's bid to persuade the nfl to let the city host a super bowl in the not-too-distant future. also new details about friday night's boat rescue in san francisco bay. the owner of the boat tells abc7 news exactly what happened. >> if they do reopen it, i bet a lot of kids would be very, very happy. >> and the fight to rebuild a dirt-filled swimming pool in the east bay.

and rehope willard pool, among others. >> it's sad to see the pool was filled with dirt. >> there are opponents of measures o and n. they argue the city should not undertake any major projects until it has cash to cover all unfunded liabilities. new this morning, san francisco is make bid to be the host city for the super bowl in 2016 or 2017. even though the 49ers are moving to santa clara. today san francisco chronicle reports mayor ed lee has been quietly working with the 49ers to be the host city, even though the game would be played at the new stadium in the south bay. tomorrow the league will announce whether san francisco is actually among the contenders. the paper said san francisco would host a series of events during the week leading up to the big game.

49er ceo reaffirmed on friday that he considers san francisco the team owes home. he says if the niners wane super bowl, the parade would be on market street. and lisa, we are wondering what santa clara mayor thinks about all of that. >> yeah, interesting. >> well, it doesn't look like it from here, but we are beginning to see this cloud deck erode in some parts of the bay area. dense fog in many areas with visibility below a quarter mile. here's a view from mount tam. out by the delta and we are looking at a few glimpse of sun. but it's still an hour and 15 minutes away at sfo. how is it going to end up this afternoon all the way around? a look at that and the look ahead coming up. >> and stanford battles notre dame into overtime. but the game ended on a controversial call. mike

lymphoma society. they started off in the fog lisa but as they make their way to the ocean are they going to see more sunshine? >> no. it's going to be pretty cloudy. we are looking at limited sun at our beaches. but it's beginning to break out around the bay area but it's also compressed and dense right in and around the water. so as we head outside right now, you notice that it looks kind of pretty out there from above vollmer peak but we are looking at higher pressure building in and that's what makes for the dense fog at the surface. closer to home, yeah, mild temperatures. not much in the way of a breeze. we are talking about a flat-looking flag there with the sun setting at 6:33. live doppler 7 hd showing that we do have some clouds offshore but the main weather feature today is that compressed marine layer. it's over 1000 feet deep. it is providing for some really pea soup fog out there with just over a mile visibility from

oakland, up toward napa, santa rosa a quarter mile, three quarter mile half moon bay and it's improved considerably through livermore but concord at a mile and san jose things beginning to brighten up. and i think from the south we will see the cloud deck ered quicker because we are look at the clear conditions along the monterey coast. as we go through the next several hours, by 11:00 we have a few patches here over into our pete bay and still some stubborn fog here but we get into partly cloudy conditions as the afternoon progresses and more fog headed our way for the next 48 hours or so before we get a wind shift works i is really going to change everything midweek. very mild condition with light winds. 60 in san jose. boy, is it damp out there? temperatures anywhere from ten degrees warmer this morning due to all of that moisture in san jose and four degrees of warming in oakland. we will look for a sunny afternoon. a few high clouds from time to time, but that drizzle and the fog lifting. st. louis we are looking at the

conditions to really switch by midweek. but take a look at this. you will notice how the green up towards the top of your screen just stays there. and that's because high pressure is building in. but it's going to block these systems monday and tuesday. you notice the one on tuesday getting a little further south toward ukiah. that will keep the temperatures pretty much the same. so very pleasant. but then we are looking at that offshore flow and another five to seven degrees of warming. 78 in concord today with 74 in fremont. low 70s for oakland with mid some upper 70s in the south bay. you have to go far north to get the 80s. with the clear start you are underway to a warm afternoon in morgan hill and gilroy. the accuweather seven-day forecast, we are counting on the fog to continue to bring us more sunshine with 70s and 80s. candlestick park should be comfortable with a west wind. monday a little change. warmer conditions come tuesday

park. then, as you know, at 5:15 the san francisco giants play the st. louis cardinals at&t park in game one of the national league championship series. yesterday stanford was on national tv against seventh-ranked notre dame. here's mike shumann with highlights of the controversial ending in this morning's sports. good morning. stanford look for their fourth straight win over notre dame yesterday in south bend. >> it was raining, a defensive battle and it came down to overtime. the second road game for josh nunes. the only stanford cut down was the defense, and golson sacked by gardner in the end zone. first time irish trailed this season. the first touchdown, tied at 10. like last week, the game was decided in overtime. irish went first. rees to jones. touchdown. stanford going for the tie, but fourth and goal stepfan taylor gets stuffed at the line.

virginia, taking three days off the campaign trail, not for golf, but debate practice. that's because, after his first debate, the president watched the polls tighten in key battleground states with romney moving ahead in virginia in one poll. team obama tells us the president will go after romney on his tax cut plans, and his ideas for winding down the war in afghanistan. but in tuesday's debate, it will be audience members who will be asking the questions in the town hall format. >> he's got to be able to go on offense without being offensive to the audience. he's got to go on offense and defend his vision his path for where he would take the country in a second term. >> now about a week ago i had a debate, and i did enjoy myself. reports en expecttors learned with corrosion concerns from two workers of that the october, 2011 fire that was quickly extinguished after a maintenance shut down. the workers told the inspectors corrosion was attacking the refinery and they were concerned for the safety of fellow provide he's. chevron maintains appropriate actions were taken to protect everyone. unchecked corrosion is what is suspected in causing the major fair in august that sent thousands of people to area hospitals. sunnyvale-based amd are cutting hundreds of jobs. advance microdevices say computers who rely on their process source around selling as much as they used to. they cut 10% of their workforce last year. this time it's expected to be 20%, mostly in engineering and sales. a california father is issuing an extreme warning to speeding drivers. philip tingley has put up this sign in front of his home in bakersfield. it reads, "warning, you hit my kid, you will be shot."

he said many neighbors support the sign and he believes it's working. he said drivers are following the 25-mile-per-hour speed limit. >> i'm not here to hurt anybody. that's not my intentions. it's just everyone slow down and we are good. >> it's a little much. a little shocking. but i understand their frustration. i mean, aside from doing that, the only alternative is possibly speed bumps, and i don't think that would be accepted very well in the neighborhood. >> police say tingley is not breaking any laws with his sign. tv host and actor gary collins has died. the 74-year-old passed away yesterday of natural causes at a biloxi, mississippi hospital. this is video of him and his wife former miss america mary

ann mogley. during the '80s he hosted the miss america pageant and the talk so "our magazine." he also appeared in numerous movies and tv shows back in the '70s, including the love boat, fantasy island and the sixth sense. boaters on lake tahoe are being asked to have patience as they may experience delays over the next six weeks while divers rid the lake of an invasive pest. they are waging a war on asian clams. the clams promote the growth of algae and that could ruin the lake's clarity. since they are not native, divers will be treating about five acres of the lake bottom starting tuesday. the clams live on a shallow gravel sandbar about 15 feet below the surface at the mouth of emerald bay. coming up, taking a bite out of bullying. the local schools that have launched a new program around lunch breaks to stop bullying. and here is a live look from san jose from our camera there showing you the shark tank empty because of the nhl strike.

9:welcome back. it's 9 could 39. this has to be a spectacular site. the space shuttle endeavour slowly inching its way to its new home in los angeles at the california cience center. they thought it would get there around 9:00 last night but they have encountered all sorts of problems having to maneuver around light poles and cutting down trying to get it out of the way. it's traveled about eight blocks this morning with roughly a mile and a half to go. >> new this morning the new mexico company that manufactures peanut butter linked to an outbreak of salmonella is expanding its recall of peanut products. sunland, incorporated has added both raw and processed peanuts both she would and out of the

shell. sunland's peanut butter sold at trader joe's has been linked to 35 salmonella cases in 19 states. some schools in marin county are taking a new approach to stop bullying. four schools have kicked off the no one eats alone campaign to try to prevent social isolation at school. abc7 news education reporter lyanne melendez has the story. >> let's face it, lunchtime can be lonely for some kids. >> if i sit alone i'm going to feel all sad because, like i can't -- i don't have no one to sit with. >> and that feeling of not fitting in can be stressful. >> they go with other people and i just stay in the room with my other friends and then i feel different. >> does that hurt? >> kind of. >> i feel angry at them. >> but those things don't happy -- happen anymore at davidson

middle school in san rafael. the white and orange wristband symbolizes inclusion. >> you see someone sitting alone and you go and say, hey, do you want to eat with me? >> this was started by an organization called beyond differences. her late daughter had a medical condition and it affected the way her classmates treated her. i said it's like occupy middle school. go back and do the most positive thing you can think of doing change the culture. >> the no one eats alone initiative has several trained team leaders monitoring the lunch hour. they are the ones in the back t-shirts. >> to make sure all the kids are involved and no one is eating alone or feeling socially isolated. >> excluding someone is a type of bullying, and studies have shown this type of isolation has a significant impact on students way beyond the lunchtime. >> but when students engage with others, educators say it changes how they interact in class.

hopefully it's going to make it there to the california science center in los angeles sometime later today. you know, lisa they can't blame the delay on weather at all. >> no. nice and sunny down there. >> yeah. >> in fact, pretty warm near 90 in l.a. today. back home we are pretty gray. still lots of fog over the bay. here's a look from vollmer peak right now. we still have the overcast over into our east bay, but temperatures are on the mild side. and we are looking at the visibility within the next, oh, two hours or so to improve dramatically. and the sunshine to work its way from the south and east out over the bay. live doppler 7 hd. we are looking at the low clouds and fog over the north bay and into the east bay. but down around the central coast it's clear and we are looking at some sun shine south of san jose right now. so temperatures are pretty mild with this deck of low clouds out there. but look at the visibility. just a mile 1/2 in oakland.

quarter of a mile santa rosa with five miles san jose. it's better in livermore but still only two miles in half moon bay. by 11:00 12:00, we have sunshine here. notice the temperatures responding to the blue sky and that fog evaporating. so 70s and 80s but with partial clearing here. we call it partial clearing in the city. near 70 today around 1:00 2:00 towards the financial district. and then we will see the fog move back in. mid-50s right any in fremont. good morning napaa, 57 for you. 56 in the city. today in san francisco a mild afternoon, but, boy, temperatures are really going to come up come midweek." right now we are warmer than we were yesterday. ten degrees warmer in san jose, but pretty gray out there for sure. by the afternoon we will see pretty decent and seasonal day. so fog and drizzle still out there. mostly sunny. a few high clouds north. and behind a few temperatures that are going to pass us by to the north we get into an offshore flow, and the heat

comes back wednesday and thursday. so here's your water vapor imagery. you can see the dark shade here. it's high pressure deflecting a couple of weak weather systems to our north. boy, it's very rainy up in the pacific northwest. it will stay wet to the north of us and it will keep the temperatures on the mild side as we see a few high clouds from time to time. low 80s return to the sacramento valley. nice and sunny there with warm temperatures in southern california. we are looking at the cool start in the sierra nevada with 20s there. upper 60s in the city. low 60s in oakland with a return to some pretty nice afternoon readings from livermore. 76 this san jose. sunny skies now allowing for the numbers to climb to the low 80s in gilroy today. 77 in hollister, and if you are headed to the game this evening still a couple hours of date with some clear conditions, mild temperatures, low 60s and then the fog returns with the temperatures dropping through the 50s at&t park.

earlier this year. when it opened, 20% of the meat was house made. it was quickly sold out. >> hopefully three years down the road, 50% is hours and then 100 percent. >> it's just one of many places around the bay area and country that make and selling their own artisan cured weeks. -- artisan cured meats. >> it's old world tradition and it was lost for a long time. >> he said it is a game of patience. it can take up to 18 months for meats to cure before they can be eaten. because they only make small batches, the end product tends to cost more than what might found at the typical grocery store. >> from fermenting to aging to rotating, to introducing molds and being patient. >> here in napa they don't just sell the cured meats, they make them, too. >> you can let that go. you don't need to slide it out. and they will teach you from
